Z = Zombies #AtoZChallenge @AprilA2Z (Author Interview & Giveaway)

Welcome to day twenty-six of the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge.
Today's letter is "Z" and my topic is = ZOMBIES.

Well, guys, we've done it. This is the last entry for the 2012 April A to Z Challenge. I hope you have enjoyed visiting me and reading about the topics I chose.
Today we are going to get up close and personal with the awesome Rusty Fischer, author of Zombies Don't Cry (A Living Dead Love Story)

Zombies Don't Cry (A Living Dead Love Story)     Maddy Swift is just a normal girl—a high school junior surviving class with her best friend and hoping the yummy new kid, Stamp, will ask her out. When he finally does, her whole life changes.

Sneaking out to meet Stamp at a party one rainy night, Maddy is struck by lightning. After awakening, she feels lucky to be alive. Over time, however, Maddy realizes that she’s become the thing she and everyone else fear most: the living dead.

With no heartbeat and no breath in her lungs, Maddy must learn how to survive as a zombie. Turns out there’s a lot more to it than shuffling around 24/7 growling, “Brains.” Needing an afterlife makeover is only the beginning of her problems. As Barracuda Bay High faces zombie Armageddon, Maddy must summon all of her strength to protect what matters most—just as soon as she figures out exactly what that is.

1.       What inspired you to write this particular book? (Hence Zombies!)

The same thing that made me connect with “Blubber” so much: I’m a sucker for underdogs. Zombies are the supernatural’s biggest underdogs. No superpowers, really, not sexy enough like vampires, not cool enough like werewolves, so… they’re fighting an uphill battle. I thought I could help.

2.       How long did it take you to write Zombies Don’t Cry?

Which version!!? Seriously, it went through about 7 drafts. The first one was really, really violent. They got less violent, more serious, more funny, more realistic, with each draft. The last draft, the “keeper,” took me about two months. That’s pretty much my pace. I set word count minimums for myself each day: 1,000-words at least. But generally once I get started, it takes over. I get up early, and write. I stay up late, and write. When it gets like that, it’s really exciting and I lose track of time.

3.       Do you have any rituals? Do write in the day or night?

I’m actually a full-time ghostwriter by trade, so during the daytime I write for my clients, period. But at night, I use my free time to write for myself. So, yeah, I’m a night writer. Rituals? I listen to smooth jazz and light a candle, but that’s about as “artistic” as I get!

4.       What question are you never asked in interviews but wish you were?

You know what’s funny? No one ever, ever, EVER asks me what my favorite zombie movie is? (It’s Return of the Living Dead, FYI.)

5.       Please list seven random likes; then do the same for dislikes, go way random.

Rusty’s 7 Random Likes

1.)     Scary movies
2.)     Fig newtons
3.)     Coke Zero
4.)     Christmas music
5.)     Comfortable shoes
6.)     An empty chair on either side of me
7.)     Listening to Christmas music while eating Fig Newtons and Coke Zero wearing comfortable shoes with an empty chair on either side of me while waiting to watch a scary movie!

Rusty’s 7 Random Dislikes

1.)     Cell phones
2.)     People talking on cell phones
3.)     People taking pictures of themselves every minute of the day with cell phones
4.)     People asking me to take their picture with their cell phones
5.)     People watching Family Guy on their cell phones
6.)     People making me watch Family Guy on their cell phones
7.)     Raspberry anything (Hey, you said “random”)

6.       Is there anything that you’re working on that we need to be looking out for?

Well, now that you ask… I just finished the first round of edits on the sequel to Zombies Don’t Cry. It’s called Zombies Don’t Forgive and comes out early next year from Medallion. I’m pretty stoked. My first sequel. And also… zombies!!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome. Thanks, Rusty! Can't wait for that sequel. Now, if you guys have not read Zombies Don't Cry, here is your chance. I'm offering a copy of your preferred format to one lucky person. Giveaway ends 5/7 at midnight.

April A to Z Challenge Letter "Y" = Yesterday #AtoZChallenge @AprilA2Z

Welcome to day twenty-five of the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge.Today's letter is "Y" and my topic is = YESTERDAY.

Once again I've chosen something very random. Let me explain..The reason my topic is "Yesterday" is to explain my being late on posting this and the previous letter. Yesterday I spent the entire day trying to recuperate from a seizure that I had the night before while attending a concert.

I had been planning on going to this show for months. I actually bought tickets in January when they went on sale. Lucero is one of my favorite bands. [If you've never listened to them, do so, you won't regret it.] My friend Chad that I went to high school with turned me on to their music about four or five years ago and I've been in love ever since.

Photo from Masquerade Atlanta
I took my friend Kate to the show. She'd never been to see Lucero nor had she ever been to the venue which is one of the best venues to see a show in downtown Atlanta because it's nice and cozy--very intimate. The venue has 3 levels; Heaven, Purgatory and Hell. Lucero was playing in Heaven on Saturday night. J Roddy Walston and The Business opened for them, I'd never heard J Roddy play before--they were seriously amazing! And good god the lead vocalist/piano player is smokin' hot. No lie.

Photo from Masquerade Atlanta

The night was stellar. Kate and I were in the very front and center. Absolutely nobody in front of us. The perfect place to be. The venue was packed and both bands were rockin' the place. Everyone was having an epic time. Ben Nichols, the lead vocalist for Lucero announced that they as a band just turned 14 years old. How amazing is that? And also the performance that night was the last of two months of being on tour. I am super happy that I was able to attend. Every one of the guys in the band had that allurement that made them shine while performing. It was like magic. The video below is from the same venue that Kate and I were at only filmed at a show 2 years ago. They did play this song "Nights Like These" at the show we attended as well. I just wanted you understand the vibe that these guys put out when they play.

Phenomenal, right? I mean there are just no words for the kind of feelings I get just watching it--and I was there, I experienced it. Although, as you can see in the video the lights were pretty harsh, especially because we were in the very front row. Near the end of the show I had to be lifted up and taken out by the security because I started to have a seizure. That sucked. Bad. The security guard sat with me until Kate made it out of the main room. [I told him not to call anyone. It wasn't that bad] They got me bottles of water and offered to do whatever I needed. I must say they took very good care of me and I am thankful for that. I also have to say that Kate did the same and I'm sure I scared the crap out of her.
After getting home and resting I just felt kind of out of it. I'm feeling much better today and I still have all of my memory from Saturday night. I am very thankful for that.

April A to Z Challenge Letter "X" = X-treme Blogging #AtoZChallenge @AprilA2Z

Welcome to day twenty-four of the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge.
Today's letter is "X" and my topic is = X-treme Blogging.

The reason that I chose this particular topic for today is that this month is actually the most that I have ever posted consistently. It's not that I don't enjoy blogging, because I do. I just haven't been able to dig down deep enough to find the creativity for genuine groovy ideas that will make for good reading. And I certainly don't want to post a bunch a crap. Let's face it, if the content that I put out is not worth reading or not interesting how many of you will want to   keep returning? Not many, I know. Because I wouldn't either.

So, this is kind of like a huge accomplishment for me, as a person and blogger. I also promise to myself and to all of you that I will continue to do my best in choosing topics that fit my personality so that my passion will shine through like the sun on a summer day. I want to make you smile when you come and visit Lady Reader's Bookstuff. That being said I want to thank each and every one of you for visiting during the A to Z event, before then and also thank you in advance for visiting in the future. If any of you have any suggestions or comments I would happily accept them in the comments below.

Ciao for now.

April A to Z Challenge Letter "W" = The White Stripes #AtoZChallenge @AprilA2Z

**I selected this post to be featured on my blog’s page at Book Review Blogs.
 Please visit & vote!

Welcome to day twenty-three of the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge.Today's letter is "W" and my topic is = THE WHITE STRIPES.

Okay y'all. I have been waiting the entire event for this very day. I think this might actually be my favorite topic. Yes, I'm going to admit it.. I totally dig Jack White. Wait. Meg, too. They are both uber-talented, smokin' hot and neither one of them show any arrogance or conceitedness to each other or anyone else. They are straight up true-blue. Wait. Black and white. Ha.

So, let me tell you a little bit about two of my favorite musicians. Check it out.

John Anthony Gillis married local bartender Megan Martha White on September 21, 1996. In unorthodox fashion he took Meg White's surname. [Is that not so effing hot?] While the newly-christened Jack White continued to play in multiple bands, Meg White first began to learn to play the drums in 1997. [Yesss! Female drummers are hot.]

In Jack White's words. "When she started to play drums with me, just on a lark, it felt liberating and refreshing. There was something in it that opened me up." [Good god! He is liberating. That just makes me want to melt.] The duo then became a band, calling themselves The White Stripes

How did they come up with the name? Well Jack says: "Meg loves peppermints, and we were going to call ourselves The Peppermints. But since our last name was White, we decided to call it The White Stripes. It revolved around this childish idea, kids have - because they are so much better than adult ideas, right?"

Yum.

The White Stripes first performed publicly August 14, 1997 at the Gold Dollar in Detroit. During the early phase of their career, Jack and Meg White provided various descriptions of their relationship.

In many early interviews, Jack claimed that he and Meg were siblings, this claim was widely believed and repeated despite rumors that they were, or had been, husband and wife., In 2001, proof of their 1996 marriage emerged, yet they continued to insist publicly that they were brother and sister.

The couple were divorced in March 2000 just before the band gained widespread attention. In a 2005 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Jack White claimed that this open secret was intended to keep the focus on the music rather than the couple's relationship:

"When you see a band that is two pieces, husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend, you think, 'Oh, I see...' When they're brother and sister, you go, 'Oh, that's interesting.' You care more about the music, not the relationship—whether they're trying to save their relationship by being in a band."
Meg White played the drums and vocals. Jack White played bass, guitars, piano, keyboards and vocals. They would play shows in random places like pool halls, bowling alleys and rec centers, giving folks nearly 10 minutes notice before showing up. They believed that when they did that "Beautiful things would happen." Meg also said: " it keeps it interesting when doing small side shows and it's also a way for us to see the town."

A few facts about Jack:

1. His guitar is named Rita (after Rita Hayworth)

2. He makes things difficult for himself on purpose. For example: If he drops a guitar pick he has to go to the back of the stage to get another one.

3. He puts the Organ just far away enough so that he has to leap to get to it to play different parts of a song. "It's not handy. I always try to push it a little further away so I have to work harder and get somewhere."

4. NO SET LIST. EVER. Therefore each show has it's own life to it.

5. Fascination with the number 3. "It's actually all based around the number three, even though there's two of us.It's vocals, guitar and drums, and then rhythm, melody and storytelling." "It forces us to create."

Also - if you ever get the chance to get an autograph from him he will usually sign it "Jack White III"

6. When they play live they pretty much stick to the red, black, and white. Jack: "And we thought it would be a good stage aesthetic to dress in the colors of the peppermint, so that people would think like kids when they saw us, or at least remember who we were. I think it's the best color combination of all time. It's just more powerful. For some reason, it just makes people think about stuff."

That. Is. So. Hot.

The White Stripes discography consists of six studio albums, one live album, two extended plays (EP), one concert film, one tour documentary, twenty-six singles, and fourteen music videos.

On September 11, 2007 The White Stripes announced the cancellation of 18 tour dates due to Meg's suffering from acute anxiety problems. [Most people didn't know this about Meg. Sad isn't it?] Following this, the duo cancelled the remainder of their 2007 tour dates including their scheduled tour of the UK.

The White Stripes at the 2007 O2 Wireless festival in London

From Jack and Meg White: 2.02.11 The White Stripes would like to announce that today, February 2, 2011, their band has officially ended and will make no further new recording or perform live. The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health. It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve What is Beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way. Meg and Jack want to Thank every one of their fans and admirers for the incredible support they have given throughout the 13 plus years of the White Stripes' intense and incredible career. Third Man Records will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from The White Stripes in their Vault Subscription record club, as well as through regular channels. Both Meg and Jack hope this decision isn't met with sorrow by their fans but that it is seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has created. It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who have shared in those creations, with their feelings considered greatly.  With that in mind the band have this to say:
"The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it what ever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful."
Sincerely,
Jack and Meg White
The White Stripes

April A to Z Challenge Letter "V" = Valentine's Day #AtoZChallenge @AprilA2Z

Welcome to day twenty-two of the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge.
Today's letter is "V" and my topic is = VALENTINE'S DAY.

Cupid by William Hoare:
An ancient god of love, Cupid is often portrayed as an infant who shoots arrows that cause people to fall in love.
(Photo Credit: Fine Art Photographic Library/CORBIS)

Every February 14, across the United States and in other places around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint, and where did these traditions come from? Find out about the history of this centuries-old holiday, from ancient Roman rituals to the customs of Victorian England.

Approximately 150 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine's Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas.

The Legend of St. Valentine

The history of Valentine's Day--and the story of its patron saint--is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl--possibly his jailor's daughter--who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and--most importantly--romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France.

Typical Valentine's Day Greetings

In addition to the United States, Valentine's Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia. In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine's Day greetings.

Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America. Howland, known as the “Mother of the Valentine,” made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as "scrap." Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.) Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.

April A to Z Challenge Letter "U" #AtoZChallenge @AprilA2Z

Welcome to day twenty-one of the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge.
Today's letter is "U" and my topic is = Children's Books that begin with the letter U.

"Under The Sun", "Under The Table", "Up Above, Down Below" and "Up on Daddy's Shoulders".
I hope you enjoy this little display.

"Under The Sun"
Written by Ellen Kandoian
Illustrated by Ellen Kandoian
(Dodd Mead & Co., 1987)

A mini geography lesson, in which a girl going to sleep on the East Coast of the USA asks her mom where the sun goes after it goes down. So, we track the sun (and sunsets!) across the Great Plains, the Rockies, the West Coast, Hawaii, Japan, China... and then, mysteriously, Europe is skipped altogether! Um, what's the deal? Just ran out of room? Didn't want to be too Euro-centric? Well, for what it is, this is a pretty nice book, but the omission of an entire continent (and kind of an important one, at that!) does make it a little flawed.

"Under The Table"
Written by Marisabina Russo
Illustrated by Marisabina Russo
(Greenwillow, 1997)

Remember when you were little and could play underneath tables and chairs? And how you could hide things down there, or even draw little pictures on the undersides of furniture, and none of the grownups would ever even see it? Ah, yes... I see the smiles of recognition. Well, that's the story here, and everything goes fine until the day when Mom and Dad turn the table over while moving some stuff around and realize just what their little girl has been up to...! They don't flip out, though, and simply direct the girl towards more appropriate artistic outlets, such as pads of paper and the like. Another nice book by Russo that deals with real-life childrearing problems, but with a knowing nod and a wink of compassion and understanding. An ideal text to read if this sort of off-road artmaking becomes an issue in your house.

"Up Above, Down Below"
Written by Sue Redding
Illustrated by Sue Redding
(Chronicle Books, 2007)

A cool, visually-oriented book for kids to trip out on. Each two-page spread is split in half, with some action on the surface (a picnic, a stage play, people rush to work) being mirrored below with what happens underfoot (ant hives, stagehands, the subway, etc.) The manga-ish artwork features people and creatures with big, round eyes, jam-packed with lots and lots of detail, with a hefty dose of humor: rabbits tap into watermains to fill a pool, the ants play poker and watch TV on a pilfered iPod (with giant-sized Cheetos on the hive floor, no less...) and so on. The text is somewhat peripheral - one pass through this with an adult and most kids will just grab it for themselves and space out on it for hours. Very nice!

"Up On Daddy's Shoulders"
Written by Matt Berry
Illustrated by Lucy Corvino
(Scholastic Books, 2006)

Not much to the story, but a nice "daddy book" with all the action taking place from the viewpoint of a young boy riding on Daddy's shoulders all day long, from the moment they leave the house 'til nighttime, when the boy gets plunked down into the top bunk of his bed. A very simple story that takes in nature, shooting hoops and a trip to the zoo -- definitely geared towards the littlest readers.

T is for Trafficking #AtoZChallenge @AprilA2Z @KeeganShayne

Welcome to day twenty of the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge.
Today's letter is "T" and my topic is = TRAFFICKING.
My friend Keegan is going to guest post and tell you a little about it.

Hi I’m Keegan Shayne from Blabbing Books. I am a South African Book Blogger and I feel so privileged to be doing a guest post on Amy’s fabulous blog! She has been a mentor to me and I have so much to be grateful for, all thanks to her; she is truly an inspiration to me!
Blabbing Books
Today I will be doing a post on Trafficking:
TRAFFICKING:
traf-fic-king
Deal or trade in something illegal.

In other words Trafficking can have anything to do with things such as people and drugs. What disgusts me, with in regards to Human Trafficking is the fact that this could consist of cutting people and selling their organs or even selling the actual people. This ladies and gentlemen is part of the sick and twisted world that we find ourselves living in today.

Trafficked by Kim Purcell is a book that I cannot wait to read and is definitely on my to be read pile. If you are like me and would like to found out more about Trafficking then I suggest you read this book. As a YA blogger I am intrigued to be able to have the opportunity to read such an insightful book that tackles such dark matters and does not shy away from such topics because it is part of the learning experience. I can only hope that this book will be extremely raw and much to my liking.

A 17-year-old Moldovan girl whose parents have been killed is brought to the United States to work as a slave for a family in Los Angeles. Hannah believes she’s being brought from Moldova to Los Angeles to become a nanny for a Russian family. But her American dream quickly spirals into a nightmare. The Platonovs force Hannah to work sixteen-hour days, won’t let her leave the house, and seem to have a lot of secrets—from Hannah and from each other.Stranded in a foreign land with false documents, no money, and nobody who can help her, Hannah must find a way to save herself from her new status as a modern-day slave or risk losing the one thing she has left: her life.

Thank you so much for having me, Amy!
PS: if any of you have read Trafficked please let me know what you thought of it in the comments section below, I would love to know!

April A to Z Challenge Letter "R" = Rhymes #AtoZChallenge @AprilA2Z

Welcome to day eighteen of the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge.
Today's letter is "R" and my topic is = RHYMES.

Flour of England, fruit of Spain,
Met together in a shower of rain;
Put in a bag tied round with a string;
If you'll tell me this riddle,
I'll give you a ring.

Daffy-down-dilly has come to town
In a yellow petticoat and a green gown.

Lucy Locket lost her pocket,
Kitty Fisher found it;
Nothing in it, nothing in it,
But the binding round it.

Rain, rain, go to Spain,
And never come back again.

Little Nanny Etticoat
In a white petticoat,
And a red nose;
The longer she stands
The shorter she grows.

Needles and pins, needles and pins,
When a man marries his trouble begins.
