Synopsis

One touch is all it takes...

Aster Layne believes in physics, not psychics. A tarot card reading on the Ocean City Boardwalk should have been a ridiculous, just-for-fun thing. It wasn't. Aster discovers she has a very unscientific gift-with a simple touch of the cards, she can change a person's fate.

Reese Van Buren is cursed. Like the kind of old-school, centuries-old curse that runs in royal families. Every firstborn son is doomed to die on his eighteenth birthday-and Reese's is coming up fast. Bummer. He tries to distract himself from his inevitable death...only to find the one person who can save him.

Aster doesn't know that the hot Dutch guy she's just met needs her help-or that he's about to die.
But worst of all...she doesn't know that her new gift comes with dark, dark consequences that can harm everyone she loves.

Quotes

The reader glanced at the burn, and her face paled.  She spoke something in a language Aster couldn't understand before she whispered, "The lemniscate. Fate changer."
Reese lowered his head, kicking puddles on the side walk.  Fear twisted his stomach.  I love her.
Aster curled up on her bed and cried.  None of this is your fault, Tillie's voice echoed in her thoughts.  Yeah, right.

My Thoughts

I will admit I bumped this book up the to be read pile.  I really wanted something fun and new.  Both things this book sounded like it had.  Thankfully I was not let down and right from the first page I knew I had made the smart choice.  Drake created a book with a unique and exciting plot, delivered with a fresh voice.  Touching Fate is the kind of book I like to pick up while in a slump because it is quick and addictive.

Sometimes you just find that book that you can just sink right into.  Touching Fate was a non stop kind of read for me, pulling me in from the first page and making me want more after the last one.  With this being said I seriously applaud this authors ability to keep up a consistent pace.  Maybe that is the wrong way to describe it because I feel I lack the ability.  Touching Fate was consistent, but it also had parts that went so quickly I wasn't sure I could turn the pages fast enough.  This is probably partially due to the fact that you get the story in a dual point of view.  Getting the story from Reese and Aster's voice really gave everything more depth for me.  Top all of this with the unique tale of fate changers and all the burdens that come with it, and I don't think I could have been more pleased.

I loved Aster.  She was not perfect by any means and some of her flaws picked at me, but honestly they were nothing in comparison to her positive attributes.  Aster is a believer in the practical, the things that we can prove, science.  However, when it turns out that she could do what should be impossible she finds a way to believe.  I admired that she tried to deny it (because who just automatically believes they can change fates), but when she did accept it she moulded it into something that fit into her life and beliefs.  There is also the little factor that she was believable in her reactions, as well as her learning curve.  It isn't hard to believe that while believing you were doing good, that you wouldn't think of the repercussions.  Aster was a well rounded character that didn't need much growth, but she still took the few steps that she needed to.

Reese for me was a typical love interest.  I guess that is if you take away the curse that he is carrying around with him.  When it came to looks and attitude I found myself feeling like I do about so many love interests lately... Underwhelmed.  Then this crazy thing happened, and the author turned my feelings around completely.  Though I may have never found myself swooning over Reese, I did find myself falling for him and hoping for him.  Reese became real for me I guess.  Though he started off as someone I could have or not, by the end my heart was bleeding for him and even I was holding my breath hoping for a miracle.  You would think it would be obvious with the chemistry happening between him and Aster, but it wasn't.  However, this gave me time to enjoy the romance that did bloom and gave Reese a chance to become someone that I could enjoy.

Touching Fate was everything that I wanted it to be.  There were characters that I could enjoy, a pace that kept me digging in and a unique plot that I can't wait to get more of.  It's picking up books like this that remind me how great it is to step out of the norm, and have the chance to read someone/something new.  With a touch of the paranormal and a twist of fate this book has hooked me on this author.  I would recommend this read to anyone that is looking for something unique and easy to get into, because with Touching Fate you can expect nothing less.
