Amy's Pick:

WE ARE THE ANTS
By: Shaun David Hutchinson
Release Date: January 19, 2016
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Genre: YA/LGBT/Sci-Fi
Pages: 464

Henry Denton doesn’t know why the aliens chose to abduct him when he was thirteen, and he doesn’t know why they continue to steal him from his bed and take him aboard their ship. He doesn’t know why the world is going to end or why the aliens have offered him the opportunity to avert the impending disaster by pressing a big red button.

But they have. And they’ve only given him 144 days to make up his mind.

Since the suicide of his boyfriend, Jesse, Henry has been adrift. He’s become estranged from his best friend, started hooking up with his sworn enemy, and his family is oblivious to everything that’s going on around them. As far as Henry is concerned, a world without Jesse is a world he isn’t sure is worth saving. Until he meets Diego Vega, an artist with a secret past who forces Henry to question his beliefs, his place in the universe, and whether any of it really matters. But before Henry can save the world, he’s got to figure out how to save himself, and the aliens haven’t given him a button for that.

Why I'm Waiting:
Hutchinson writes a brilliant coming of age story that is poignant, provocative, and enthralling about a teenage boy dealing with bullying, the suicide of his boyfriend and the end of the world. What else more could you possibly want in a novel?

When Calamity lit up the sky, the Epics were born. David’s fate has been tied to their villainy ever since that historic night. Steelheart killed his father. Firefight stole his heart. And now Regalia has turned his closest ally into a dangerous enemy.

David knew Prof’s secret, and kept it even when Prof struggled to control the effects of his Epic powers. But facing Obliteration in Babilar was too much. Once the Reckoners’ leader, Prof has now embraced his Epic destiny. He’s disappeared into those murky shadows of menace Epics are infamous for the world over, and everyone knows there’s no turning back...

But everyone is wrong. Redemption is possible for Epics—Megan proved it. They’re not lost. Not completely. And David is just about crazy enough to face down the most powerful High Epic of all to get his friend back. Or die trying.

Why I'm Waiting:
Never having picked up a book by Mr. Sanderson prior to Steelheart, I had no real idea what I was getting myself into.  I am eagerly awaiting this one because so far each book has been better than the last.  There is nothing not to love: great characters, awesome pacing, fantastically detailed settings and the list just goes on.  David is also one of my favorite male leads.  He is impulsive at times, but he is able to be reasoned with as well.  I have to say this is not my favorite cover but if I'm honest it does fit with the first two.

Happy Reading! Ciao:

What are you waiting on this week? We would love to hear it! Make sure you link up your post as well so we can stop by.

In the tradition of Speak, this extraordinary debut novel shares the unforgettable story of a young woman as she struggles to find strength in the aftermath of an assault.

Eden was always good at being good. Starting high school didn’t change who she was. But the night her brother’s best friend rapes her, Eden’s world capsizes.

What was once simple, is now complex. What Eden once loved—who she once loved—she now hates. What she thought she knew to be true, is now lies. Nothing makes sense anymore, and she knows she’s supposed to tell someone what happened but she can’t. So she buries it instead. And she buries the way she used to be.

Told in four parts—freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior year—this provocative debut reveals the deep cuts of trauma. But it also demonstrates one young woman’s strength as she navigates the disappointment and unbearable pains of adolescence, of first love and first heartbreak, of friendships broken and rebuilt, and while learning to embrace a power of survival she never knew she had hidden within her heart.

The two-bit town of Rogue City is a lawless place, full of dark magic and saloon brawls, monsters and six-shooters. But it’s perfect for seventeen-year-old Westie, the notorious adopted daughter of local inventor Nigel Butler.

Westie was only a child when she lost her arm and her family to cannibals on the wagon trail. Nine years later, Westie may seem fearsome with her foul-mouthed tough exterior and the powerful mechanical arm built for her by Nigel, but the memory of her past still haunts her. She’s determined to make the killers pay for their crimes—and there’s nothing to stop her except her own reckless ways.

But Westie’s search ceases when a wealthy family comes to town looking to invest in Nigel’s latest invention, a machine that can harvest magic from gold—which Rogue City desperately needs as the magic wards that surround the city start to fail. There’s only one problem: the investors look exactly like the family who murdered Westie’s kin. With the help of Nigel’s handsome but scarred young assistant, Alistair, Westie sets out to prove their guilt. But if she’s not careful, her desire for revenge could cost her the family she has now.

This thrilling novel is a remarkable tale of danger and discovery, from debut author Michelle Modesto.

Why I'm Waiting

The Girl at Midnight was one of my favorite books in 2015.  It reminded me a lot of the Daughter Smoke and Bone trilogy by Laini Taylor and basically left me craving a second book just as desperately.  I would like to say that it isn't just the cliff hanger that is brining me back to this one, but also the dynamic characters and the beautiful writing.  All around July is just too far away...

Synopsis

Fortune favors the bold in this adventurous tale of broken friendships, forbidden love, and a fiery heroine's journey to escape the role into which she was born. Perfect for YA fantasy fans of Shannon Hale, Malinda Lo, and Tamora Pierce.

Maeve, princess of Connacht, seems to have won her freedom. Her father, the High King, is finally allowing her to explore the world beyond his castle. But Maeve soon discovers that being the High King's daughter doesn't protect her from bullying or the attention of unwelcome suitors.

Struggling to navigate a new court, she must discourage the advances of her father's rival, who is vying with her host's son for her hand in marriage. Maeve is a pawn trapped between these two boys. Her bold defiance will bring her to the brink of disaster, but her clever gamble may also lead to her independence. Though she faces danger and intrigue, Maeve will also discover what kind of person-and queen-she's destined to become.
Quotes

Not yet, I thought.  I can't talk freely about Ea without naming Odran, and I won't   I can't speak of him to Kian.  Kian's been kind to me   he might even become my friend someday   but Odran is my heart.  I can't entrust anything so precious to Kian yet.
It was only after Conchobar was gone that I realized I was doing the same thing, protecting Debriu by not telling her the whole truth.  I was my father's daughter after all.
The girls I'd thought of as my friends shut me out at every turn.  They never said a word to me, and if I tried talking to them, they suddenly had important things to do elsewhere.

My Thoughts

Friesner created a beautiful second and final book for the Deception's Princess duology.  Though this is the first set that I have picked up, it is more than obvious that these are books that deserve to be recognized.  These are beautifully written and captivating, demanding your attention.  This is historical fiction/fantasy at its best and they are the kind of books that make me wonder why I don't pick this genre up more frequently.

Walking into this book I was not sure what to expect.  There was a magical but tragic note that finished up Deception's Princess, and I wasn't sure where Friesner would take this tale with so much ending in the last book.  However, I was happy with what I found.  Deception's Pawn weaved some of the elements that made the first book so memorable, but added new elements that helped the tale grow and develop into something else.  The pacing is a little slower at the start but Friesner is setting up Maeve's new surroundings, as well as her new friends.

Maeve really is something else.  She is bold, stubborn and above all else clever.  These are not things that she developed in this book, but things that Maeve was right from the start.  Not just the start of the books but right from childhood.  Though despite being clever she still had much to learn about life and the things that sometimes we don't want to do, but it must be done for the better of everything.  There are moments where she wants to give in to the pressures and expectations of her, but they are always shadowed by her strength and determination to be who she wants.  Maeve wants nothing more than to have her own people and be a fair ruler.  Maeve realizes that sometimes things aren't always fair but she wants more than anything to be a fair and just ruler that people can look up to.   This is the final leg of her journey and proof that Maeve has the ability to become exactly what she wants.

There is no lack of romance wanting in this read.  Maeve has never had a shortage of men wishing that they could make her theirs.  The thing with Maeve though is that she doesn't want or need a man to make her strong and complete.  So, what I am getting at is that unless a man fits her life and what she wants, Maeve really has no inclination to be the pretty doll that stands beside a man as his prize.  Also to an extent her heart is already taken, but Maeve is young and does need to learn.  This is not to say that she didn't sometimes wonder about certain boys, but when it boiled down to it she knew what she really wanted in her heart, and that wasn't what most men were looking for.  There are romantic notes throughout but it is not the focal point by any means, and I love every moment if this.

To say that I expected things to turn out the way they did, would be a lie.  For anyone that picks up these books and falls in love with it, will be happy with the way it all comes to an end.  Sure, there are questions but when you become invested with characters you always wonder where they go when the pages stop.  Never having picked up a book by this author but always admiring the stunning covers, I know with certainty now that this will not be the last book I read by her. With vivid characters and a beautifully done setting, the Deception's Princess duology is not one to be missed.

Anarchy Found by @JAHuss [Blitz + Giveaway]

About The Book:

ANARCHY FOUND
By: J.A. Huss
Publication date: December 2, 2015
Publisher: Science Future Press
Genre: Superhero Romance
Pages: 280
Everyone needs a hero.
That’s what Detective Molly Masters tells me. “What we need,” she says, “what the whole world needs,” she pleads, “is a champion.”
The only thing I want to talk about with Molly Masters is how I’d like to make her scream my name when I push her up against a wall, slide my hand up her thigh, and live out my wildest fantasies.
“Someone who will fight against injustice,” she says.
I’ll fight against anything you want, honey. Just come a little closer.
“Someone who will stand tall in the face of adversity,” she says.
I’ll do it standing, sitting, or lying down. See how easy I am?
“Someone who believes in the value of a good deed,” she says.
I believe in the value of me, sweetheart. Because I’m Lincoln Wade. Jaded genius, obscenely wealthy, capable of violence, and looking for revenge.
Molly Masters might have delusions of grandeur. She might see me as some superman capable of cleaning up the scum, filth, and corruption in Cathedral City.
But I’m not the hero she’s looking for.
I’m the dark alley where all her good intentions hide.
So be careful what you wish for, Molly Masters.

Because you’re about to get it.

Book Trailer:

Excerpt:

Little red lights line the tunnel. It sorta reminds me of an airport runway. The mud turns to concrete about twenty feet in and there’s a small light up ahead. I’m really not sure what to expect, so I get my gun out just in case.

A few paces on and the tunnel turns sharply to the left where the light is brighter. I can hear yelling. Bike boy is yelling.

Someone is talking back to him, but he’s laughing too. I let out my breath and relax a little as I creep forward into the chamber. The first thing I see is the wrecked bike mounted on a red mechanic’s lift. Then toolboxes, some weird contraption that looks like a… robot, rolling around?

A computer, then another, and another. A whole wall of computers, actually. Food wrappers and half-empty protein shake containers. Parts. A black muscle car. A long table lined with shit that looks like pieces from a chemistry lab. And a massive aquarium-sized tank holding luminescent jellyfish.

All this time bike boy is yelling and waving those black-gloved hands in the air, splashing a protein drink all over the floor.

“What the fuck, Case? I told you not to mess with my bike, you asshole.”

“I didn’t touch your bike, Lincoln.”

“Stay the fuck out of my business. I crashed the goddamned bike and had to hitch a ride home and Sheila is somehow offline. Offline! You motherfucker!”

“Calm down,” Case says.

“She’s not gonna miss anything being offline for a few minutes. In fact, if I were you I’d be asking how it’s possible she got knocked off so easy. Doesn’t that strike you as weird?”

It comes from a giant face on a wall-sized flat screen mounted on the side of a… cave? What the fuck? “And you lost your right to work alone months ago, so don’t get all self-righteous about me being around today.”

“What’s that supposed to—“

“Hey, asshole,” the guy on the screen says over bike boy’s tantrum, cutting him off.

“I didn’t need this complication—”

Bike boy stops talking. Because the guy on the screen is waggling his eyebrows at me. “What the fuck are you doing?” bike boy asks. “Stop making stupid faces—”

“We have com-pan-eee.” The guy on the giant screen nods his head at me.
Bike boy whirls around, shoots me a dirty look, and then growls, “I’ll call you back,” as the giant screen goes black.

We stare at each other for a few moments, our eyes locked. “Oh, my—”

“You’re still here,” he says over me.

“—God.” I look around one more time.

1. Cave filled with…
2. Super bike.
3. Souped-up muscle car.
4. Giant flat-screen phone chat.
5. Computers everywhere.
6. Robot?
7. Some kind of science lab.

A few loud beeps interrupt my list. “Online,” a female voice says from the ceiling. A pause, and then, “There has been a breach and we have a visitor.” A hologram in the form of a woman appears in the middle of the cave and I can only assume this is…

8. Sheila, apparently back online.

I look around a little more and spy… not a cape, thank God, but a… a…

9. Helicopter, parked at the far end of the enormous cavern.

And then I get the perfect list after all, because I see…

10. Guns.

No, they are more than mere guns. I know my way around a gun and these are—

“What the fuck are you doing here, gun girl? I thought we parted back in the forest.”

“Oh, my God,” I repeat. “You’re Batman.”
